Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972 on the 4th of April 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. She was raised by her mother and grandmother. She is an only-child. Scott attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls followed by Temple University after graduating. Scott was a student in secondary school and also worked at two jobs. The hope was to become a English High School teacher. Her dream to become an English teacher in high school ended when she dropped out of school. As a poet She began to sing at live poetry recitals. Then she joined along with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form the group. You Got Me is the result of their collaboration. The singer was initially spotted as an artiste at a Roots Show. Following that, she started collaborating with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She was also able to learn about the arts of performing during the Canada-wide tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was also the first signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
